Another set of Firefox Addons/Extensions that are cool and goes that extra mile to enhances user experience on the internet. The Firefox add-ons Nuke Anything Enhanced and Remove It Permanently! allows you to remove selected contents and objects from a visiting website temporarily or permanently. This includes Flash objects, advertisements or even simple text contents.

Nuke Anything Enhanced

Nuke Anything can make selected contents from the website disappear temporarily leaving only the contents you want to see, read or watch. It perfectly works the othe way as well wherein it can let you remove all the contents from a website except the select parts or objects. This is ideally useful when you focus on specific contents on a website or even when printing where you print only what you want.

Because, it is only temporary, a simple page refresh (F5) will bring back the contents on the webpage.

Click to add “Nuke Anything Enhanced” to your Firefox browser.

Remove It Permanently (RIP)

Remove It Permanently on the other hand is an enhanced addon where it can actually make the selected contents disappear permanently. This means when you next visit the page somedays later, the removed contents will not be ever shown again. Remove It Permanently remembers these objects and hence you never have to bother again. RIP can also block Googl Ads specifically.

RIP allows import/export of the websites and the removed contents information so can be backed up and used elsewhere.

Click here to add “Remove It Permanently” to your Firefox browser.

When you visit a Secure website in Firefox chances are that the FavIcon for the website is replaced with a Green bar with the details of the company. This is because of the default properties in Firefox to display detailed information of the website from the Extended Validation Certificate on the website. However, if the website doesn’t host a Extended Validation certificate then the website URL (link) in the address bar is not highlighted or in otherwords shows as a normal website URL.

However, just to give you that extra highlighting of a website thats claims to be secure, you can choose to display the website domain or the subdomain highlighted in a Blue background next to the FavIcon of the website.

To do so, open a Firefox browser and type “about:config” in the address bar and press enter. Click the button “I’ll be careful, I promise!” button.

Type “browser.identity.ssl_domain_display” in the filter. Double-click the entry and set the following values:

1 – Show the top level domain (ex: google.com)

2 – Show the full domain including the subdomain (ex: www.google.com)

0 – Do not highlight the domain (default)

When you click on a XPI file (install button in Firefox addon page for an extension) to install to install a Firefox extension, you would see a counter counting down from 3 to 0 before letting you to install. This is one of the most annoying settings in Firefox that I have ever come across.

This was delibrately done to avoid known security issues explained in detail here.

However, if you want to disable this countdown and directly get to install the addon, try the following:

1. Open a firefox browser window and type “about:config” in the address bar.
2. Click “I’ll be careful, I promise” button.
3. In the Filter search box, enter “security.dialog_enable_delay“. You can see this set to 2000 milliseconds.

4. Double-click this entry and change it to “0″. This should disable the delay counter.

Most of the organisations, if not all have a proxy server or an appliance that performs content filtering to block contents from the internet which could be anything from pornography to gambling or hacking systems to terrorism aiding content. These gives a fine control of what comes into the organisation and what the employees have access to.

Now, what is it for normal home users with a PC or a laptop. Well, if you are a Firefox browser user then you got lucky with the “ProCon Latte” Add-on for Firefox. ProCon Latte is a Content filter for Firefox which can control the contents that is inappropriate for viewing on your PC.

One would wonder at the level of customization that ProCon Latte offers that can almost stand up against those enterprise class appliances.

You can add a whitelist which is a list of websites that you consider are safe and/or required to visited from your PC.

You can enable Profanity Filter with offensive words replaced with a custom set of characters like “***”

The Main filter allows you to set the words to look for on any website address or in its content and block access to this site completely. You can also add a custom message to display when people visit these websites.

While you would argue that all these settings can be overiden. Yes, thats true but not so easy when you set a password to edit or change the settings. Now you are in control.

Apart from all these, you can actually save bandwidth by not downloading these contents but also make your websites load faster. A classic example would be to block AD delivery websites to the filter and you would see how faster your websites can load without these advertisements.

Swiftweasel is an optimized build of the Mozilla Firefox web browser for Linux. Seperate builds are available for both AMD and Intel processors. Swiftweasel is 100% compatible with all Firefox themes, plugins, and extensions.Release cycles are based on the release of Firefox versions by Mozilla.

SwiftWeasel optimization include

1. Swiftweasel is compiled -O3
2. Multiple builds that are PGO (Profile Guided Optmization) optimized.
3. Include additional instruction sets the processors support (SSE, SSE2, SSE3, MMX, 3DNow).
4. IPv6 is disabled to prevent slowdowns caused by its present implementation.
5. HTTP pipelining is enabled by default.
6. Numerous other small changes to make Swiftweasel as responsive as possible.

Install SwiftWeasel in openSUSE

There are no 1-click installs available for SwiftWeasel. To install SwiftWeasel on openSUSE, download the arch.tar.gz files for your Intel or AMD platform here

Unzip & Untar

Unzip and untar the downloaded file

saihari@opensuse11:~/Desktop> tar -zxvf swiftweasel-3.0.10_intel-pgo_x86-arch.tar.gz

This should unzip and untar the swiftweasel directory onto your desktop.

Move this directory to /usr/local

saihari@opensuse11:~/Desktop> mv swiftweasel /usr/local/

Create Symbolic Link in /usr/bin for the swiftweasel executable.

saihari@opensuse11:~/Desktop> ln -s /usr/local/swiftweasel/swiftweasel /usr/bin/

Now, launch swiftweasel for the first time

saihari@opensuse11:~/Desktop> swiftweasel
Adblock Plus: Failed to read filters from file /root/.sw3/swiftweasel/cdfkr43d.default/adblockplus/patterns.ini: [Exception... "Component returned failure code: 0x80520012 (NS_ERROR_FILE_NOT_FOUND) [nsIFileInputStream.init]“ nsresult: “0×80520012 (NS_ERROR_FILE_NOT_FOUND)” location: “JS frame :: chrome://adblockplus/content/filterStorage.js :: anonymous :: line 369″ data: no]

As you would see, Adblock is enabled by default and this straight away reduces the bandwidth utilization by not downloading the ADs which in itself improves the browser responsiveness. The errors above appear for the first time will prompt to choose an Adblock subscription. Select your nearest subscription and click OK. This should do.

You can also create a menu item for SwiftWeasel. As a root user create a new Desktop file under /usr/share/applications as follows:

opensuse11:/usr/share/applications # vi SwiftWeasel.desktop

Copy the following contents into the file:

[Desktop Entry]
X-SuSE-translate=true
Comment=Web Browser
Comment[en_US]=Web Browser
Encoding=UTF-8
Exec=/usr/local/swiftweasel/swiftweasel
GenericName=Web Browser
GenericName[en_US]=Web Browser
Icon=/usr/local/swiftweasel/icons/mozicon128.png
Name=SwiftWeasel
Name[en_US]=SwiftcwWeasel
Path=
StartupNotify=true
Terminal=false
TerminalOptions=
Type=Application
X-DCOP-ServiceType=
X-KDE-SubstituteUID=false
X-KDE-Username=
Categories=Network;WebBrowser;X-Ximian-Main;X-Ximian-Toplevel;GTK;

This should create the menu item under “Applications – Internet – Web browser“.
