Songbird is a free opensource Music player for Linux, Windows and Mac OS Platforms. Songbird provides a public playground for Web media mash-ups by providing developers with both desktop and Web APIs, developer resources and fostering Open Web media standards. The last time we wrote about Songbird here in September was when it was in beta and since then Songbird has grown from strength to strength and is a stable release (1.1.1) with x86 and x64 support.

The feature list has grown bigger as well with the following new features

With integrated services like 7digital Music Store to buy MP3s, mashTape to discover Flickr photos, YouTube videos, last.fm biographies, Google news (and more) for the currently playing artist joining along with last.fm, Concer tickets and SHOUTcast Radio

Import media from local system or from iPod

Gapless Playback & Replay Gain – Skips padding data due to encoding and chains files for gapless playback experience

Album Artwork – Display the currently playing track’s album art and write new artwork back to the file.

Library management to browser organize, sort and search your media

Integrated Web browser with features like bookmarking, tabbed browsing

Multi-Language support with over 25 languages

Automatic Updates

Install Songbird 1.1.1

Again, a big change from last time is one openSUSE user would love. Yes, we now a 1-click installer supporting openSUSE 11.1/11.0/10.3 hosted at Packman. To install Songbird, click this 1-click installer

This should download the YMP file and automatically launch the YaST package manager to add the required Repositories and download and install Songbird and the dependencies. Click next on the Songbird installation screen and Next again on the installation proposal window. This should start adding the required repositories, download and install Songbird and its required dependencies. Click Finish when the installation completes successfully.

If gst-fluendo-mp3 package is installed on your system you may end up with the following error message during the installation.

songbird-1.1.1-0.pm.6.x86_64 requires gstreamer-0_10-fluendo-mp3, but this requirement cannot be provided
uninstallable providers: gstreamer-0_10-fluendo-mp3-0.10.10-42.pm.1.i586[Packman Repository]

To resolve the problem, cancel the installation and launch YaST seperately, to select to uninstall gst-fluendo-mp3 and install gstreamer-0_10-fluendo-mp3. This should fix the dependency issue and you can start again with the 1-click install and go through with a clean installation.

Once installed, Songbird should be found under Applications – Multimedia – Audio Player.

This should install Sockso under “Applications – Multimedia“. Click Sockso to launch for the first time. For a start, click collection tab and select the directories to search and music files to your collection. Then ofcourse, you can select songs and create your own playlists which inturn will be available for users who logon to the web interface.

If you would like to create a list of users, do so from the Users tab. Users can always register from the web interface as well.

General Sockso configurations including the the webserver port number title etc, enable/disable allowing users to upload files can be done from the General tab. That pretty much should do for you to get up and running with your Sockso Personal Music server on openSUSE.

By default, the website URL will be http://<public IP>:4444 where 4444 is the port on which the webinterface is available. Sockso, picks up your public IP (your IP on the internet not the 192.168.0.x on your pc). This could be from your Router or from your own PC if you use USB modems. However, you can check if Sockso works OK from http://localhost:4444 or even your local IP (ex: 192.168.0.100:4444) if you are accessing from your local home network. As I said earlier, if there is a firewall then you need to open this port for incoming connections. You need to understand opening any port for an incoming connection can be a security issue.

As you can see, the web interface too doesn’t have too many confusing options, very few but the ones required allowing your users to quickly get listening to your music collection.

You can watch VideoCD, SVCD, DVD, 3ivx, DivX 3/4/5, WMV and even H.264 movies.

Another great feature of MPlayer is the wide range of supported output drivers. It works with X11, Xv, DGA, OpenGL, SVGAlib, fbdev, AAlib, DirectFB, but you can use GGI, SDL (and this way all their drivers), VESA (on every VESA compatible card, even without X11!) and some low level card-specific drivers (for Matrox, 3Dfx and ATI), too! Most of them support software or hardware scaling, so you can enjoy movies in fullscreen. MPlayer supports displaying through some hardware MPEG decoder boards, such as the Siemens DVB, DXR2 and DXR3/Hollywood+.

MPlayer has an onscreen display (OSD) for status information, nice big antialiased shaded subtitles and visual feedback for keyboard controls. European/ISO 8859-1,2 (Hungarian, English, Czech, etc), Cyrillic and Korean fonts are supported along with 12 subtitle formats (MicroDVD, SubRip, OGM, SubViewer, Sami, VPlayer, RT, SSA, AQTitle, JACOsub, PJS and our own: MPsub). DVD subtitles (SPU streams, VOBsub and Closed Captions) are supported as well.

For a list of supported Formats, Audio/Video codecs, Audio/Video output devices click here

To install Mplayer in openSUSE, follow the procedure listed below. I’ve tried the installation here onopenSUSE 11.0 but should work on openSUSE 103 and earlier as well.

Mplayer requires the following pre-requisite packages:

ALSA (alsa,alsa-firmware,alsa-utils,alsa-tools)

opensuse11:~/ Mplayer-1.0rc2 # ./configure –enable-gui –enable-menu

where –enable-gui enables the GUI support

–enable-menu supports Onscreen Display (OSD)

opensuse11:~ # make

Install MPlayer

opensuse11:~ # make install

That completes the installation of core Mplayer. We now need to install the codecs:

Install Codecs

Download Codec

The latest Codec packages are available here

opensuse11:~ # http://www8.mplayerhq.hu/MPlayer/releases/codecs/essential-20071007.tar.bz2

opensuse11:~ # tar -xjf essential-20071007.tar.bz2

opensuse11:~ # mv essential-20071007 /usr/local/lib/codecs

Download and Install Skins

The Skins are required to start the GUI sessions (required when GUI is enabled)

There are a lot of free Skins available here

Let’s install the first on the list “Blue”

opensuse11:~ # wget http://www.mplayerhq.hu/MPlayer/skins/Blue-1.7.tar.bz2

Unzip & untar

opensuse11:~ # tar -xjf Blue-1.7.tar.bz2

opensuse11:~ # mv Blue /usr/local/share/mplayer/skins/

Mplayer looks into /usr/local/share/mplayer/skins/ directory for the directory named “default”. So, let’s duplicate “Blue” to “default”

opensuse11:~ # cp -r Blue default

Setup OSD

When we compiled with “–enable-menu” switch, it creates menu.conf & input.conf file in “etc” directory under the source folder from where you installed Mplayer. Copy these files into the /usr/local/etc/mplayer/ directory

opensuse11:~ # cd Mplayer-1.0rc2/etc/

opensuse11:~ # cp input.conf menu.conf /usr/local/etc/mplayer/

Setup Fonts

Setup a Symbolic Link to a freetype font as follows:

opensuse11:~ # ln -s /path/to/sample_font.ttf $PREFIX/share/mplayer/subfont.ttf

Example

opensuse11:~ # ln -s /usr/local/fonts/truetype/impact.ttf /usr/local/share/mplayer/impact.ttf

Ok! we are done!!!

Let’s start mplayer. To start Mplayer in GUI mode., run “gmplayer”

opensuse11:~ # gmplayer

To start Mplayer in command line. Type “mplayer” for options.
