This should download the YMP file and automatically launch the YaST package manager to add the required Repositories, download and install Moovida and the dependencies. Click next on the Moovida installation screen and Next again on the installation proposal window. This should start adding the required repositories, download and install Moovida and its required dependencies. Click Finish when the installation completes successfully.

This should install Moovida under “Applications – Multimedia – Audio Player”.

When you launch Moovida, scroll to the left of the window to “Devices & Shares” to select your devices and or stores from your local or network systems to scan for your audio, video, picture files etc. This should scan for all the media types under these stores and list them. From there on, you should be able to select files from the library and create/modify your playlists etc.

The plugin architecture allows add-ons to enhance features for Moovida. A few examples are the Youtube, Flickr, grooveshark plugins that allows viewing online videos, pictures, audio etc.

The interface of Moovida is so smooth and elegant, I have to admit this has to be one of the best, if not the best Media Center I have seen. Click here to visit the project home.

Troubleshoot startup problems:

Moovida may crash when you try to start after successful installation. When you try to start from the terminal window, you may be faced with the following error message:

This error seems to be caused by the library file libgstffmpeg.so . To resolve the problem, simply rename the file libgstffmpeg.so under /usr/lib64/gstreamer-0.10/ or /usr/lib/gstreamer-0.10/ (in 32-bit version).

oggDump – Created mainly for developers to receive packaging information

oggCut – Cuts parts from an ogg file defined by a start and an end time position

oggCat – Concatenates ogg video files to form one new ogg file that can be interpreted by all players, that can play ogg/theora/vorbis files (vlc, mplayer, cortado etc.)

oggLength – Returns the length of an ogg file

oggScroll – Shows up every video frame in a seperate X-Window

Install ogg Video Tools in openSUSE

To install ogg Video Tools in openSUSE, click this 1-click installer from Packman supported on openSUSE 11.1/11.0/10.3

This should download the YMP file and automatically launch the YaST package manager to add the required Repositories, download and install ogg Video Tools and the dependencies. Click next on the ogg Video Tools installation screen and Next again on the installation proposal window. This should start adding the required repositories, download and install ogg Video Tools and its required dependencies. Click Finish when the installation completes successfully.

All the above mentioned ogg tools should now be installed under /usr/bin/.

Running the commands with a -h arguement will provide with various command options. Following are some usage examples for the ogg tools:

oggResize usage examples

Create new Ogg video with a different frame size without altering the original file

oggResize -s 320×240 myOrigFile.ogg myNewFile.ogg

Create new Ogg video with a different Datarate

oggResize -d 512000 myOrigFile.ogg myNewFile.ogg

Create new Ogg video with a different Datarate

oggResize -f 16 myOrigFile myNewFile.ogg

oggThumb usage examples

oggThumb creates JPEG files by default in the directort from which it is run.

To output files in PNG format use “-o”

oggThumb -o png myfile.ogg

Output thumbnail pictures with a set size (-s):

oggThumb -s 320×240 myfile.ogg

Creating a series of thumbnails at specified times (-t in seconds)

oggThumb -t 2,3,10 myfile.ogg

Creating a series of thumbnails at specified Frame positions (-f)

oggThumb -f 100,250,450 myfile.ogg

Thumbnails from more than one ogg file

oggThumb -s 320×240 -t 1,5 myfile.ogg myfile2.ogg myfile3.ogg

oggSlideshow – usage example

Creates theora video from a number of JPEG/PNG files with default Ken-Burns effect.

Create an Ogg slideshow with the size of 320×240 pixel, a datarate of 256 kBit per second and a 16 frames per second

oggSlideshow -s 320×240 -d 256000 -f16 -o mySlideshow.ogg picture1.jpg picture2.jpg picture3.jpg

Set effects type with -t option for one of the following:

Ken-Burns-Effect (option: -t kb)

The Ken-Burns-Effect slides through the picture and zooms in or out.

Crossfade-Effect (option: -t cf)

To have a smooth changeover between two pictures, these pictures are crossfaded.

Plain Slideshow (option: -t p)

All pictures are concatenated without any changeover. This function is very datarate efficient.

To specify the presentation duration in seconds for every picture (-l)

oggSlideshow -s 320×240 -l 12 -o mySlideshow.ogg mydir/*.jpg

oggSplit – usage examples

Demultiplexing an Ogg video file is quite easy, you would use something like this:

oggSplit myfile.ogg

Splits the file into

theora_6f1634f6.ogg

vorbis_41bf6b07.ogg

The number after theora_ and vorbis_ is the stream ID. This number is internally used by the Ogg container. The stream ID is necessary in ogg and is set at stream creation time and should be expected to be a “random” number. These files are fully usable and can be played or viewed from a player.

oggJoin – Usage example

Multiplexing an Ogg file is as easy as demultiplexing. Refering to the example above you can write

oggJoin myNEWfile.ogg theora_6f1634f6.ogg vorbis_41bf6b07.ogg

This command will create the file “myNEWfile.ogg” which consists of the theora_* stream and the vorbis_* stream.

oggCut – usage example

oggCut extracts parts of an ogg file.

To create a new ogg file from a current file with start position (-s in milli seconds) and end positions (-e milliseconds)

oggCut -i inputFile.ogg -o outputFile.ogg -s 2000 -e 60000

oggCat usage example

To join one or more ogg files

oggCat newFile.ogg firstFile.ogg secondFile.ogg

cutmp3, as the name implies is a simple command line tool to edit and cut MP3 files without loosing any quality. cutmp3 can edit the mp3 files interactively or selection (start time and end time) can be provided from the command line or even better can be used with a timetable fiile specifiying different start/end times from the same MP3 files. cutmp3 saves the output to a seperate MP3 file with causing any harm to the original source file or can also output to the STDOUT.

cutmp3 uses mpg123 to playback and hence needs to be installed or have a symbolic link set to the MP3 player installed on the system.

Install cutmp3 in openSUSE

To install cutmp3 in openSUSE, click this 1-click installer from Packman supported on openSUSE 11.1/11.0/10.3

This should download the YMP file and automatically launch the YaST package manager to add the required Repositories, download and install cutmp3 and the dependencies. Click next on the cutmp3 installation screen and Next again on the installation proposal window. This should start adding the required repositories, download and install cutmp3 and its required dependencies. Click Finish when the installation completes successfully.

cutmp3 should now be installed as /usr/bin/cutmp3

saihari@opensuse11:~> which cutmp3
/usr/bin/cutmp3

In a simple usage,we provide an input/source MP3 file, an output/target MP3 filename, start and end points of selection as follows:

saihari@opensuse11:~> cutmp3 -i Best_Of_Blue_Medley.mp3 -a 0:00 -b 1:00 -O test.mp3
saved 0:00.00 – 1:00.00 to ‘test.mp3′.

where

-i specifies the input or source file

-O specifies the output file or the file saved to (-o instead of -O will prefix the output file with the name you specifiy)
-a specifies the start point of selection
-b specifies the end point of selection

cutmp3 can work with a timetable file with multiple start and end points instead of specifying in the command. However, if you do specfiy start and end points in a command along with a timetable file then the timetable file gets overriden.

The timetable file format is as follows:

—- 8< cut here —-
0:01 1:00
1:05 3:57
11:15 19:33
01:01.34 02:39.78
0:0 -1:0
—- 8< cut here —-

Note: The ‘:’ is mandatory. Negative time means distance from end of file. Syntax is NOT hh:mm:ss but mm:ss.subeconds

For a complete list of options, simply type the cutmp3 command without any arguments as follows:

saihari@opensuse11:~> cutmp3

cutmp3 version 1.9.5

Usage: cutmp3 -i file.mp3 [-a inpoint] [-b outpoint] [-f timetable]
[-o outputprefix] [-e] [-c] [-C] [-q]

cutmp3 -i file.mp3 -a 0:37 -b 3:57 copies valid data from 0:37 to 3:57
cutmp3 -i file.mp3 -f timetable copies valid data described in timetable
cutmp3 -i file.mp3 -o song writes the output to song0001.mp3, song0002.mp3,…
cutmp3 -i file.mp3 -O song.mp3 writes the output to song.mp3
cutmp3 -i file.mp3 -O - writes the output to STDOUT
cutmp3 -i file.mp3 -d 2 use second sound card
cutmp3 -i file.mp3 -s 0 no maximum silence length
cutmp3 -I file.mp3 [-F] prints file information [in raw mode]

Automatic Command-line Ripper (acripper) is a free opensource tool for ripping and encoding CD tracks on the fly. It also tries to get the CD information from feeddb.org, a CDDB website and writes it to the encoded files. If no information from freedb.org is available, it then tries to read CD information (CD title, artist name, tracks names) from a text file names “titles.txt” in the working directory.

In summary, ACRipper is intended to easily and quickly create ogg files with tracks information from the command-line. It also supports FLAC and MP3 codecs.

Install acripper in openSUSE

To install acripper in openSUSE, click this 1-click installer from Packman supported on openSUSE 11.1/11.0/10.3

This should download the YMP file and automatically launch the YaST package manager to add the required Repositories, download and install acripper and the dependencies. Click next on the acripper installation screen and Next again on the installation proposal window. This should start adding the required repositories, download and install acripper and its required dependencies. Click Finish when the installation completes successfully.

This should install acripper under /usr/bin/acripper

acripper is quite a handy tool. Simply insert a CD into the drive and from a terminal window run acripper. This will by default connect to the freedb.org website for CD information and if can’t find info use titles.txt file for CD information and rip and encode into ogg format (default)

Songbird is a free opensource Music player for Linux, Windows and Mac OS Platforms. Songbird provides a public playground for Web media mash-ups by providing developers with both desktop and Web APIs, developer resources and fostering Open Web media standards. The last time we wrote about Songbird here in September was when it was in beta and since then Songbird has grown from strength to strength and is a stable release (1.1.1) with x86 and x64 support.

The feature list has grown bigger as well with the following new features

With integrated services like 7digital Music Store to buy MP3s, mashTape to discover Flickr photos, YouTube videos, last.fm biographies, Google news (and more) for the currently playing artist joining along with last.fm, Concer tickets and SHOUTcast Radio

Import media from local system or from iPod

Gapless Playback & Replay Gain – Skips padding data due to encoding and chains files for gapless playback experience

Album Artwork – Display the currently playing track’s album art and write new artwork back to the file.

Library management to browser organize, sort and search your media

Integrated Web browser with features like bookmarking, tabbed browsing

Multi-Language support with over 25 languages

Automatic Updates

Install Songbird 1.1.1

Again, a big change from last time is one openSUSE user would love. Yes, we now a 1-click installer supporting openSUSE 11.1/11.0/10.3 hosted at Packman. To install Songbird, click this 1-click installer

This should download the YMP file and automatically launch the YaST package manager to add the required Repositories and download and install Songbird and the dependencies. Click next on the Songbird installation screen and Next again on the installation proposal window. This should start adding the required repositories, download and install Songbird and its required dependencies. Click Finish when the installation completes successfully.

If gst-fluendo-mp3 package is installed on your system you may end up with the following error message during the installation.

songbird-1.1.1-0.pm.6.x86_64 requires gstreamer-0_10-fluendo-mp3, but this requirement cannot be provided
uninstallable providers: gstreamer-0_10-fluendo-mp3-0.10.10-42.pm.1.i586[Packman Repository]

To resolve the problem, cancel the installation and launch YaST seperately, to select to uninstall gst-fluendo-mp3 and install gstreamer-0_10-fluendo-mp3. This should fix the dependency issue and you can start again with the 1-click install and go through with a clean installation.

Once installed, Songbird should be found under Applications – Multimedia – Audio Player.

This should download the YMP file and automatically launch the YaST package manager to add the required Repositories and download and install TV-Browser and the dependencies. Click next on the TV-Browser installation screen and Next again on the installation proposal window. This should start adding the required repositories, download and install TV-Browser and its required dependencies. Click Finish when the installation completes successfully.
