Install Grisbi in openSUSE

To install Grisbi, click this 1-click installer from Packman supported on openSUSE 11.1/11.0/10.3

This should download the YMP file and automatically launch the YaST package manager to add the frequired Repositories and download and install Grisbi and the  dependencies. Click next on the Grisbi installation screen and Next again on the installation proposal window. This should start adding the required repositories, download and install Grisbi and its required dependencies. Click Finish when the installation completes successfully.

This should install Grisbi under “Applications – Office – Financial“. Click Grisbi to launch your newly installed Personal Financial Manager. As with any other Personal Finance Manager, you need a bit of work to do in terms of setting up a anew account and then banks, currencies (default is Euro), Financial years in considerations, Budget lines, Different Payment methods like Wire Transfer, Online Transfer Credit Card etc,

Once you have setup a new account, you can see a list of tabs for the most commonly used functions like Transactions, Accounts, Third parties from or to whom funds are transferred like your electricity company, your landlord, employer etc.

The defaults for these views and settings like the currencies etc, display tabs etc can be modified from the Edit – preferen menu.

One of the things that you may always want to fine tune with financial software is the categories. You can always add or delete categories of your choice. There is a nice scheduler option available as well for regular/recurring transactions that can be updated either automatically or manually into the system.

Finally, the reporting works pretty well indeed. There are lot of default reports and you can always create your own custom report. You can also import/export your reports to an external file.

Grisbi also allows you to import GNUCash, QIF, OFX files into the system or export to a QIF or a CSV file. Overall a nice neat Personal Finance Manager customizable to your needs and with a bit of work setting up initially, you have an almost full blown accounting system on your openSUSE.

Install QFaxReader

Click this 1-click installer for QFaxReader from Packman to download the YaST MetaPackage file (YMP) and launch with YaST Package Manager. This 1-click installer supports openSUSE 11.0/10.3/10.2 & SuSE 10.1/10.0.

Click Next on the QFaxReader description window and Next on the installation proposal window. This should add the required repositories and install QFaxReader and relevant dependencies. Click Finish when the installation successfully completes.

NOTE: Click here to enable 1-click install in openSUSE 10.2

Once installed, search for “qfaxreader” from the menu and launch QFaxReader. This is a failry simple and straight forward to use and print your Fax.

Install AbiWord

To install AbiWord on your openSUSE, click one of the following 1-click installer (YaST MetaPackages) based on your openSUSE version. This will automatically download the YMP file and launch YaST Package Manager.

Click Next in the page showing Repository selected and then click Next on the page showing AbiWord package selection and click Next again on the installation proposal window. This will start adding the required repositories and install the AbiWord package and the required dependencies. Click Finish when the successfully installed on your openSUSE.

Once installed, you can find Abi Word can be found under “Application – Office – Word Processor”

Click AbiWord to start the word processor. You can see Abiword launches almost instantly compared to openOffice or Microsoft Word. There is nothing much that need introduction here, however, features like integrated Google Search, Translation, Wikipedia, Dictionary and Image Editing through GIMP can all be found under the Tools menu.

Another interesting feature is the Collaboration. Collbaration can be using using Jabber or using direct TCP connections coming into your server or system.

Install Money Manager Ex
Packman repositories hosts a 1-click install for Money Manager Ex. Click this to download the YMP file (YaST Metapackage file) and automatically open with YaST. This 1-click installer is supported in openSUSE 11.0/10.3/10/2 (x86, i586, PPC – 10.3 only) and SuSE 10.1 (x86&i586). The version at the time of writing is 0.9.3.0-0.pm.1

Once, YaST starts click Next on the installation welcome screen and click Next again on the summary page showing the installation package and the repositories to be added. This starts adding the repositories and download and install the required packages and dependencies. When the installation completes successfully, click Finish.

This installs Money Manager Ex on your openSUSE and add it to “Applications – Office – Financial” as “Money Manager Ex”.

Click “Money manager Ex” to start the application. When running for the first time, Money Manager Ex takes through a wizard to get you started in minutes. Select the language and click OK. Click  “Create a New Database”. This will prompt you to create a Database file. Enter the filename and click Save.

Click Next on the new database wizard. Select the currency, enter User Name and click Finish. If your currency is not listed, Click Add in the currency list and add as required.

This will now launch a Create a new account wizard. Click next. Enter the name of the account and click Next. Select the account type (Checking/savings or Investment Account) and click Finish. In the window that pops up, enter the account, bank and related details and click OK.

That completes the wizard and takes you to the home window for Money manager Ex. As you can see, its simple and easy to use. The left navigation page contains all account and related tools like accounts, budgets, investments, assets etc. Clicking on any of the menu item will bring up the details like transactions on the rightpane.

The tools menu allows you to organise things like payee, budgets, expense/income categories, repeat transaction etc. These can however be organised realtime while entered transactions.

For instance, click the account name to show account standing details. Click New to add transaction, select a transaction type and select payee. Here, if no payee exists, simply enter the payee name and click Add.Similarly select a category or create a new one on the fly, enter the transaction values and click OK.

Similarly, click Budgeting and click Add budget year to create a budget for a year. Once added, you can go in and add add budgetted values and their regular occurence like weekly, monthly, quaterly etc for each of the selected category.

Reports are just 1 click.Click and select any of the reports to show graphs (where available) and detailed report on the selected report type.

You can at anytime, edit the defaults like the currency from Tools – Options.

To install PDFedit on your openSUSE, click one of the following 1-click installers for your openSUSE version. This will download the YaST Metapackage (YMP) file and start YaST Package Manager to add the required repositories and download and install PDFedit and related dependencies.

Click Next on the Welcome page showing the repositories to be added for PDFedit installation. Click Next in the summary page showing package selection and then Next again in the final summary window. Once the installation is complete, click Finish.

This should install PDFedit under “Applications – Office – More Programs” as “PDF Editor edit .pdf files”

Click “PDF Editor” to launch PDFedit. Open a PDF file from the menu.

Features like Page save as image, rotate page, edit Page metrics draw lines or rectangles, add text, add text highlighting & strike through from Page menu.

From the tools menu, you can convert selected pages into XML

To edit preferences, click Tools – Options

Install Buddi in openSUSE
To install Buddi in openSUSE, click this for Buddi from Packman. This YaST Metapackage is supported on openSUSE 11.0/10.3/10.2 & SuSE 10.1/10.0. Clicking the 1-click installer will download the YMP file and launch Yast Package Manager.

Click Next in the Buddi install welcom page. Click Next again in the installation summary page. Enter the password for root if you are not a admin user. This will let YaST to add the required repositories and download and install packages and dependencies for Buddi. Once installation is complete, click Finish.

This adds Buddi under “Applications – Office – Financial” as “Buddi”

Click Buddy to launch buddi. This will take you to the home (Accounts page). There are 3 tabs “My Accounts” , “My Budget“, “MyReports“. Based on the tab you are in, the edit menu option changes. For instance, when in the default My Accounts tab, edit menu allows you to create, modify different types of Accounts.

When in the “My Budgets” tab, it allows you to create, edit different budget categories and entries.

Run reports from the My Reports tab.

You can always edit your personal preferences from “Edit – Preference”

One of the features is the fact that Buddi has a nice plugin interface where addons written by author or 3rd parties to interface and provide addon features. To install a plugin, download the plugin from here and unzip it. Now, from Edit – Preferences, click Plugins tab, click Add. You may need to restart Buddi. Here I add Dashboard plugin to provide realtim dashboard feature to buddi.
