Just back from holidays in India and there you go the heat is still ON. OpenSUSE 11.0 is finally released with great new features bulit-in. openSUSE 11.0 sports a great new look and packs a punch with latest updated packages of all the known famous opensource software.

openSUSE 11.0 Beta 3 is released for testing with 700 bug fixes

A couple of days ago, we saw the roadmap for openSUSE 11.0 release and so far we are on track. Yes, the openSUSE team were on time to release the openSUSE 11.0 Beta 3 as planned on the 15th of May 2008. This comes with a significant 700 + bugs fixed. Great work!!!

openSUSE 11.0 changes/features enhancements & highlights

openSUSE 11.0 is a major change from openSUSE 10.3. Lot of improvements and changes have goine in from the initial Alpha release until now. Some of the highlighting features in openSUSE 11.0 includes

Linux Kernel 2.6.25 is default kernel

KDE 4.0.3 takes the centre stage from KDE 3.x as the default KDE Desktop Environment

For Gnome Desktop environment, GNOME 2.22.1 is the default

Changes to Installation workflow and themed installation is used. DVD installation uses images to speed up installation

RPM payload switch to lzma (results in smaller rpm packages)
 
libzypp uses a new much faster solver

German language support on CD media

Sax2 and YaST Qt frontend are ported to Qt4

Run Internet Explorer in OpenSuse 10.3 & 11.0 using ies4linux

ies4linux is simple free open source utility to allow Linux users to install and run Internet Explorer on their Linux distributions. This utility doesn’t require to be installed and run as a root user and in fact it is recommended not to do so by the developers.

Internet Explorer 7 (IE7) (partial support)

Internet Explorer 6 (IE6)

Internet Explorer 5.5 (IE5.5)

Internet Explorer 5 (IE5)

The latest version at the time of writing this article is ies4linux 2.99.0.1. ies4linux requires WINE to be preinstalled for a successful installation.
