openSUSE 11.2 Milestone is released for testing

openSUSE 11.2 Milestone 4 is out for download and testing today. With significant changes from Milestone 3, this is not still production or stable usage standrad but testers and openSUSE enthusiasts should be able to have a go at this new kid on the block.

Major changes since openSUSE 11.2 Milestone 3 include,

Known Issues with Milestone 4

Some of the known bugs include

800×600 screen resolution when booting with LiveCD irrespective of any selection made

X does not display properly in VirtualBox initially. Workaround is to switch to a virtual console (Ctrl+F1) and then switching back to X (Ctrl+F7)

Some packages are missing from KDE live CDs, including plasma-addons and OpenOffice_org-kde4.
Live-CDs will not boot from USB if system has a CD-ROM drive.

During installation, an empty error box is shown during the bootloader config, but it does install properly.

openSUSE 11.2 Milestone 2 step by step install procedure

While openSUSE 11.1 has settled down, the development has gathered pace with the openSUSE 11.2 MileStone 2 already released out to the public testing. Sorry, just couldn’t catch the Milestone 1 in time for your readers.

Major changes to the openSUSE 11.2 Milestone 2 from Milestone 1 are

Default Filesystem is Ext4
Inclusion of Linux Kernel version is 2.6.30rc6
GnuCash 2.2.9
gcc 4.4
Alsa 1.0.20

Download the openSUSE 11.2 Milestone2 here (choose the hardware type 32bit/64bit then the medium (DVD/LiveCD and finally the download type BitTorrent/HTTP)

The following is a step by step procedure to install openSUSE 11.2 Milestone2 with KDE Desktop environment:

Once you have downloaded the ISO image, burn the image onto a DVD and boot the system with the DVD in place.
Choose Install from CD, Select the language and keyboard layout and click Next. This should start the system analysis. Click Next when complete.

Choose “New Installation” in the next screen and click Next.

Select the region and the Time zones. Uncheck “Hardware clock set to UTC time” if not required and click Next.

Select the Desktop Environment type (KDE here) and click Next

Select the parition type and click Next. You can edit the default partition tables or the LVM settings here.

Enter the 1st users details(excluding Root) and set the password and click Next

Go through the installation summary and click Next. If you want to change any settings click on the relevant title before clicking Next. Click Install on the message box to confirm and start the installation procedure.

Once the installation completes. you launch into the desktop with ther openSUSE welcome message.

openSUSE 11.2 development features and roadmap

As we are all still settling down with openSUSE 11.1 version of our favorite operating system, developers are already on the next big thing and the development of openSUSE 11.2 version seems to be hapening at a much faster pace. The lastest release is the openSUSE Milestone2.

With openSUSE 11.2, the major changes are

Linux Kernel 2.6.30

The Linux Kernel versio 2.6.30 which includes lots of prominent features like the inclusion NILFS log, A cahcing layer for NFS, fastboot architecture to name a few. The latest build (openSUSE 11.2 milstone2) has 2.6.30rc6

Default File System: Ext4

Ext4 is the evolution of the Ext3 and is a deeper improvement over Ext3 than Ext3 was over Ext2. Ext4 modifies important data structures of the filesystem such as the ones destined to store the file data. The result is a filesystem with an improved design, better performance, reliability and features.

KDE 4.3 & GNOME 2.28 – openSUSE 11.2 moves ahead with the integration of KDE 4.3 desktop environment and GNOME 2.28 which has improved user interface called SONAR

other improvements include the inclusion of Firefox 3.5, OpenOffice 3.1 and improvements to YaST with much better parition Manager, plasmoids improvements etc

18th August 2009 – openSUSE 11.2 Milestone 6 release (Patchlevel update of leaf packages finished)

07th September 2009 - openSUSE 11.2 Milestone 7 release (First localised build)

30th September 2009 - openSUSE 11.2 Milestone 8 release (Fully Localised build)

09th October 2009 – Last fixes localisation (No Release)

15th October 2009 – openSUSE 11.2 Release Candidate 1 (RC1) release

29th October 2009 – openSUSE 11.2 Release Candidate 2 (RC2) release
