Run Internet Explorer in OpenSuse 10.3 & 11.0 using ies4linux

Posted by admin on May 13th, 2008

ies4linux is simple free open source utility to allow Linux users to install and run Internet Explorer on their Linux distributions. This utility doesn’t require to be installed and run as a root user and in fact it is recommended not to do so by the developers.

ies4linux can support

Internet Explorer 7 (IE7) (partial support)

Internet Explorer 6 (IE6)

Internet Explorer 5.5 (IE5.5)

Internet Explorer 5 (IE5)

The latest version at the time of writing this article is ies4linux 2.99.0.1. ies4linux requires WINE to be preinstalled for a successful installation.

Install Wine

Download ies4linux as a normal user

Opensuse:/home/saihari # wget http://www.tatanka.com.br/ies4linux/downloads/ies4linux-latest.tar.gz

Unzip & untar the files

saihari@OpenSuse:~/> tar -zxvf ies4linux-latest.tar.gz

Change directory and install

saihari@OpenSuse:~/> cd ies4linux-2.99.0.1

saihari@OpenSuse:~/ies4linux-2.99.0.1> ./ies4linux

Sometimes, you might end up with the following error..but don’t panic:

IEs4Linux 2 is developed to be used with recent Wine versions (0.9.x). It seems that you are using an old version. It’s recommended that you update your wine to the latest version (Go to: winehq.com). No user interface available. Use command-line ies4linux or install pygtk. Details: http://www.tatanka.com.br/ies4linux/page/No_GUI IEs4Linux 2 is developed to be used with recent Wine versions (0.9.x). It seems that you are using an old version. This is a known problem caused by GTK. Simply run the installer without the GUI as follows:

saihari@OpenSuse:~/ies4linux-2.99.0.1> ./ies4linux –-no-gui

That installs ies4linux on your linux under your home directory. Time to start your Internet Explorer.

Run Internet Explorer

saihari@OpenSuse:~/> ie6 &

This starts Internet Explorer 6. While Internet Explorer 7 is not fully installed, partial support is available.

The default installation installs and creates the following: -

- install IE6

- install Adobe Flash 9

- create icons on Desktop and Menu

However, if you would like to customize then use the help for more information

saihari@OpenSuse:~/ies4linux-2.99.0.1> ./ies4linux -h
