openSUSE 11.1 Beta 4 is now released

A few days before we saw the Beta 3 release for openSUSE 11.1 and here we go, Beta 4 is out, although a bit delayed from the original scheduled date. openSUSE 11.1 is now taking some shape and seems to be getting good if not better with every release. openSUSE 11.1 Beta 4 is available as Live CDs for KDE4 and GNOME desktops. The DVD is available for download only via Bit Torrent.

Install GNOME/XFCE/KDE3 Desktop environment from KDE4 or vice versa

If you have installed openSUSE with the default selections of choosing one of the available (say KDE4) then only the selected Desktop environment is installed. However, should you later choose to install and use another desktop Environment say (GNOME) then this can easily be installed and as always just a few clicks away.

openSUSE 11.0 Beta 3 is released for testing with 700 bug fixes

A couple of days ago, we saw the roadmap for openSUSE 11.0 release and so far we are on track. Yes, the openSUSE team were on time to release the openSUSE 11.0 Beta 3 as planned on the 15th of May 2008. This comes with a significant 700 + bugs fixed. Great work!!!

openSUSE 11.0 changes/features enhancements & highlights

openSUSE 11.0 is a major change from openSUSE 10.3. Lot of improvements and changes have goine in from the initial Alpha release until now. Some of the highlighting features in openSUSE 11.0 includes

Linux Kernel 2.6.25 is default kernel

KDE 4.0.3 takes the centre stage from KDE 3.x as the default KDE Desktop Environment

For Gnome Desktop environment, GNOME 2.22.1 is the default

Changes to Installation workflow and themed installation is used. DVD installation uses images to speed up installation

RPM payload switch to lzma (results in smaller rpm packages)
 
libzypp uses a new much faster solver

German language support on CD media

Sax2 and YaST Qt frontend are ported to Qt4
