Default installs of openSUSE and SUSE Linux will not be able to send emails. The following simple configuration procedure should help you setup postfix to send emails. Infact, this should work on most of the Linux distros.

Install & configure esmtp – user configurable Mail Transfer agent (MTA)

esmtp is a user configurable relay-only Mail Transfer Agent (MTA) with a sendmail compatible syntax. It’s based on libESMTP supporting the AUTH (including the CRAM-MD5 and NTLM SASL mechanisms) and the StartTLS SMTP extensions.
