How to install Skype VoIP client in openSUSE

Skype is a Voice over IP (VoIP) client that allows you to make free PC to PC calls to other Skype users and to make cheap calls to Landline and mobile telephones across the world.
Skype provide a lot of features including
Cheap International Calls
Online Number for people to call you at cheap local rates
Send Text SMS messages directly from the Skype client
Voice mail facility and Call Forwarding features.

Skype can be installed in Linux and here we can see how to install Skype in openSUSE 10.x & 11.0
The pre-requisites for Skype are
Qt 4.2.1 or later
D-Bus 1.0.0 or later
libasound2 1.0.12 or later
Let,s start installing the pre-requisites
linux-4518:~ # yast2 –install libqt4 libqt4-x11 libqt4-dbus-1 libsigc++2
Download Skype SUSE RPMs here
http://www.skype.com/go/getskype-linux-suse
linux-4518:~ # wget http://www.skype.com/go/getskype-linux-suse
Install Skype
linux-4518:~ # rpm -Uvh ./skype-2.0.0.72-suse.i586.rpm

Alternatively, download the RPM from a web browser and start with “YAST Meta Package Installer” to complete the installation.
Once, installed. if you are using a proxy at home or if it is your work PC behid a proxy then you need to enter the Proxy details. In the bottom of the Skype window, click the Skype icon and select Options and then Advanced. Enter the proxy server and the ports. This should do.

Did you find an explanation / solution for the “error: failed to stat” message. It seems to spoil some installations.

I’m have a huge problem trying set skype sound to work with SUSE 11.1.
no matter what I try, playback and microphone does not work.
plz, do you have any suggestions??

@Sam: have you checked if your MIC works in general

Yes, I did.
My motherboard have an integrated ALC883 sound chip.
And everything works fine outside Skype, playback and recording.
When I set Skype playback to work with pulseaudio it works for some seconds then the entire sound system seems to crash, no more sounds, even outside Skype.
My motherboard is an ASUS P5VD2-X;
And Suse have automatically set VT1708/A [Azalia HDAC] (VIA High Definition Audio Controller) as the driver for my motherboard ALC883 integrated sound chip.

Hi!
I’m new to the linux world so I’m hoping you can help me out with Skype video? I have just installed openSUSE 11.1 and I got Skype working fine except for the video part. Do you know if Skype can do video on opensuse11.1? I have a Logitech webcam plug into my laptop and I was able to test the webcam in the options menu okay but I can not do video calling.

I have the exact same problem as Sam,
Playback and recording of audio works just fine in all of my apps *except* Skype, have been meddling around with the settings for a while now with no luck at all.
My hardware is:

Any ideas?

Ditto, no playback here either. Everything worked fine in openSuSE 11.0, but not in 11.1.

firefox 3.5.6 no association with skype: extension for Skype beta 2.1.0.47, how i can fix this ?
when i try to call from a skype web link i get an error from firefox.
